It’s said that when Memorial Day (originally Decoration Day) was established in 1868, it was observed in May because that’s when flowers bloom all across the nation. A century and a half later, flowers are indeed blooming. And it always seems that in late spring, American flags begin to bloom as well. Homes that have stood bare throughout the cold winter are suddenly flying flags beside their doors. Waving flags hang along the roads. Painted flags on rocks and walls are refreshed for the season. Tiny flags stand solemnly beside veterans’ graves. And a little flag stuck in a New England beach fence might be a remembrance of those who served and died for our country, or a celebration of the return of summer's warmth, or both❤️🤍💙

Happy Friday!🌿And a little Flashback Friday of sorts: this house (the 1767 General William Hart house, now home to the Old Saybrook Historical Society) was in one of the very first photos I posted when I started this IG account in January 2019. It’s one of those historic sites that somehow look very different - and equally beautiful - in every season.
