It’s a bold claim, but I’m going to make it: this chocolate cupcake, filled with chocolate and topped with more chocolate and garnished with what is really an obscene yet necessary excess of chocolate, is the best cupcake in Connecticut. I admit I haven’t eaten every cupcake in Connecticut (some might say I look like I have, which…well, yes I kind of do.) In any case, this cupcake is so good that I drove all the way to the Goodie Shoppe in New Fairfield – one hour and forty-five minutes each way – to procure this one to photograph for this post because I wanted to tell you how good it is.
And I didn’t just photograph it, though that was my original plan. Oh no. Over several days, as if against my own will and fighting all my better judgement, I consumed the entire thing. See the deal with this cupcake is, you have to eat it, but you can’t eat it all at once. It’s pretty large, yes, but that’s not why; the thing is that this cupcake is intense. Fluffy yet dense, extremely rich and sweet but mysteriously not unpleasantly rich and sweet, it doesn’t mess with any flavors or icings or extras other than straight up chocolate. It’s not fancy, and neither is the bakery it comes from. And that’s the point. You don’t drive 100 miles to New Fairfield to buy an ordinary-looking cupcake from a no-frills bakery in an unremarkable shopping center unless that cupcake is seriously impressive.
