Looking good, Centerbrook!😍When I relaunched TS Looking good, Centerbrook!😍When I relaunched TSOC back in 2019, one of the first posts I published was a road trip through the lower Connecticut River Valley towns of Essex, Deep River, and Chester.
❤️
Centerbrook is one of the three villages that make up the town of Essex. Though it’s often overlooked, it’s totally worth a stop (this 1717 Colonial is about a 30-second walk from a specialty cheese shop, if that gives you an idea!)
❤️
The lower Connecticut River Valley is such a lovely little region, and if you haven’t found your way to this part of the state before, I highly recommend it.

✨New post alert!✨A grand 19th-century hotel, a ✨New post alert!✨A grand 19th-century hotel, a cluster of sprawling summer cottages, a coastal resort community for the wealthy and connected, a Gothic fairy-tale church, a sweeping view of the Thames River, and a hundred unexpected stories - like this one, of a former women’s bowling alley transformed into a French Second Empire Cottage. Now up on TSOC, a close-up look at New London’s Pequot Colony Historic District. (Link in bio.) #thesizeofconnecticut
They say a good Instagram caption includes a call They say a good Instagram caption includes a call to action, so here’s one: go for a walk. Rediscover a stretch of road you thought you knew. Stare out at the water. Find the pale remnants of a sunrise. (Or, if you want a traditional social media call to action: click the link in my bio and check out my blog😉 It’s full of local travel ideas, and more are coming soon!) #thesizeofconnecticut
OK guys, I think we’re safe now. Maybe. ☀️ T OK guys, I think we’re safe now. Maybe.

This is one of those proverbs one sees quoted often, sometimes linked generally to New England and sometimes specifically to Vermont. I tried to track down its source, but didn’t find anything conclusive. However, I did come across some similar phrases from other regions of the country. For example, this from Alaska in May 1926: “You can take off your flannels now. The ice has gone out of the Interior rivers.” And this from Virginia in April 1883: “Everybody is asking for a touch of spring fever. It is a little too early yet to take off your flannels. The setting hen is doing her level best just now.”
